The veterinarians at Iowa Veterinary Wellness Center are experts in a rehabilitative medical therapy known as veterinary prolotherapy. This technique, also called non-surgical ligament reconstruction, is beneficial for pets suffering from ligament or tendon damage.
What is Prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy involves a series of injections, typically containing a mixture of medications, into the affected area or joint. These medications are designed to relieve pain, aid in ligament and tendon reconstruction and regeneration, and promote faster healing. The injections stimulate the growth of new connective tissue, helping to stabilize the joint and alleviate pain.
Prolotherapy in Practice
Prolotherapy has been utilized in human rehabilitative medicine for over 35 years. The side effects are minimal, usually limited to soreness and potential bruising, which typically subside within one to two days after treatment.
Considerations Before Prolotherapy
It is important to note that prolotherapy is not a replacement for surgery. Some pets may not be suitable candidates for this procedure. A thorough evaluation and consultation with one of our veterinarians will help determine the best course of action for you and your pet.
